If you have ever had traditional dentures, you know that they work by using the shape and suction of the mouth to remain stationary. What makes implant dentures unique is that they are supported by strategically placed dental implants in the jawbone. These implants are typically made from titanium which fuses to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This gives dental implants their stability, comfort, and longevity. There are two types of implant dentures available. Here’s how they work.
Fixed or permanent implant dentures are made to always remain in place. They can only be removed by your dentist. Most of the time, four to six strategically placed dental implants are placed to hold the permanent denture. This is a preferred option for many because they act more like real teeth.
Removable implant dentures are sometimes referred to as “snap-on” dentures. They are also held in place using dental implants. The thing that makes them different is that they use clips or ball sockets to secure them. This way, patients can remove their dentures at home as needed for cleaning and sleeping.
The first step in getting implant dentures is the consultation. During this time, we will examine your smile to confirm that you are a good candidate for implant dentures. At this point, we will create a treatment plan that meets your needs. For some patients, preparatory procedures are needed before you can get dental implants to improve the probability of their success. This could include gum disease treatment, bone grafting, or another treatment.
Once your jawbone and gum tissue are in excellent shape, the dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone. Then, they fuse together in a process known as “osseointegration.” This process usually takes between three and six months. Next, metal connector pieces called “abutments” are placed on the ends of the dental implants. Your final denture is designed and crafted according to your needs and secured in place by your dentist.
Most healthy adults are able to get implant dentures. We will confirm this during your consultation. To be a good candidate for implant dentures, you must:
