Choosing a dentist to replace your lost teeth with dental implants is a big decision. Among the many factors that should influence your choice is a dentist’s credentials and accomplishments. Dr. Parry wants to be a top choice for implants in the Summerfield area, so he is always pursuing continuing education in order to provide truly excellent care for our patients. In fact, he recently became an Associate Fellow of the AAID. What does that mean? Continue reading to find out.
What Is the AAID?
The AAID is the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. It was founded in 1951 as the world’s first organization committed solely to implant dentistry. General dentists and specialists become members in order to further their education and participate in the AAID’s mission “To advance the science and practice of Implant Dentistry through education, advocacy, and research support; and to serve as the credentialing standard for the profession.”
The core values of this organization are respect, integrity, equitability, research, and education. Dentists who participate in the AAID are determined to live up to these noble ideals.
Becoming an Associate Fellow of the AAID
In order to become an Associate Fellow of the AAID, a high level of commitment and skill is required. Here are some highlights of the credentialling process:
- A dentist must complete at least 300 hours of postdoctoral or continuing education related to implant dentistry.
- The education should include a minimum of 75 hours of participation in hands-on courses.
- The education should touch on various sciences, including internal medicine, anatomy, histology, pathology, pharmacology, bone physiology, immunology, radiology, and dental materials.
- Candidates for an Associate Fellowship must pass two rigorous exams, one of which is an oral examination in front of AAID-credentialed reviewers.
