The Scary Effects of Alcohol on Your Teeth

It’s spooky season once again, which means it’s time for frightful festivities like Halloween parties! But while you probably already know that all those trick-or-treats are terrors for your teeth, there’s another favorite that could cause them quite a fright! Believe it or not, alcohol can be just as bad for your oral health as candy. Here’s why if you’re not careful, adult beverages can be downright scary for your smile!

The Dangers of Alcohol on Oral Health

If consumed in moderation, alcohol can be safe for adults over the age of 21. But in addition to the cognitive problems excessive drinking can cause, it can also endanger your oral health for several reasons.

Sugar

First, even if not mixed into a witch’s brew, alcohol contains a lot of sugar. Those sugars can harm your teeth and increase your risk of cavities. If you do decide to indulge, the rule of thumb is the drier the drink, the lower the sugar content. Mixed drinks like punches are among the worst offenders, because they not only contain alcohol, but they also typically contain a sweet syrup or juice, giving your teeth a double dose of sugar.

Staining

Another danger of alcohol is its staining properties. Because beverages like wine contain tannins that leave deposits of color on your teeth, these can easily discolor them and leave your teeth looking downright frightful. If you enjoy a glass of wine or colored liquor, be sure to follow it with a glass of water and brush well before you settle down for the night.

Dry Mouth

Finally, another unfortunate side effect of alcohol is its tendency to dehydrate. This can cause dreaded dry mouth, which can make your mouth the perfect host for cavity and gum disease-causing oral bacteria.

Remember, just because drinking alcohol can be dangerous to your teeth doesn’t mean you have to skip it entirely. Just be sure to drink responsibly: follow any alcohol with water, brush well before bed, and do not under any circumstances drink and drive. Happy Halloween!
